Health agency warns of rise in drug-resistant infection mainly affecting gay men

Health experts have issued an alert over an “extremely antibiotic-resistant” infection mainly affecting gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) announced there has been a rise in cases of Shigella sonnei, which is highly infectious, Wales Online reports.

Around 47 cases were reported in the four months between September 2021 and January 2022 - a significant increase from the 16 cases identified in the previous 17 months from April 2020 to August 2021.
