'Headbutt' leaves police officer with suspected broken nose as three teens arrested at village shops

A police officer has suffered a suspected broken nose after being 'headbutted' by a teenager allegedly resisting arrest in a Tameside village.

Greater Manchester Police says the 18-year-old man kicked one officer in the back before headbutting another in the face on Tuesday afternoon (January 25).

He was one of three teenagers arrested at the Millbrook shops on Huddersfield Road, near Stalybridge, after two suspects had been spotted in the area at around midday.

Two boys aged 15 and 17 were arrested, along with an 18-year-old man.

GMP says the 17-year-old had to be physically restrained by an officer inside a shop after he began resisting arrest, while the 18-year-old 'became aggressive' against two officers, kicking one and headbutting the other.

Officers searched the area and found a vehicle on Besom Lane, which police believe the teenagers had parked up before their arrest.

Police say the car was previously stolen during a knifepoint robbery last Friday (January 21).

All three teenagers were arrested, with both the 17 and 18-year-olds remaining in custody for questioning, while the 15-year-old has been released on bail.

A female arrested at the scene was later de-arrested, GMP says.

A spokesperson for GMP Tameside North and East said: "Just after 12 noon yesterday, officers from GMP Tameside's Neighbourhood Task Force carried out a strike on a vehicle after two wanted males were located at the Millbrook Shops on Huddersfield Road, Stalybridge.

"Two males, a 15-year-old and an 18-year-old, were detained in the vehicle and a third male, a 17-year-old, was detained inside a shop after he had to be physically restrained by an officer after he began resisting.

"The 18-year-old detained outside, became aggressive and kicked one officer in the back before head butting another to the face, causing a suspected fractured nose.

"All three males were arrested on suspicion of various offences including robbery, possession of class A and class B drugs with the intent to supply, GBH with intent and possession of a bladed article."
