'He's downgrading': Celtic hero provides take on Matt O'Riley to Brighton transfer

In a recent analysis of Matt O’Riley’s transfer from Celtic to Brighton, former striker Chris Sutton shared his perspective on the record-breaking move.

He noted that while joining the English Premier League side marks an advancement in terms of domestic competition, it may not hold the same prestige as playing for Celtic - especially since the Seagulls are devoid of European football this season.

Sutton praised "irreplaceable" O’Riley for his professionalism throughout the transfer process, emphasising that the midfielder maintained high performances for Celtic and did not aggressively seek a departure, contrasting with some players who might pursue a transfer in a less respectable manner.

“He’s downgrading," Sutton said on BBC 5 Live's Monday Night Club.

"Club size, absolutely downgrading. Do you know what, though? He’s conducted himself superbly well. Hasn’t been one of those players who’s thrown his toys out of the pram demanding a move. Brilliant player for Celtic.

"Is Matt O’Riley irreplaceable? I think he is. He is that good. Great signing for Brighton, though.”
