'He needs to move on' - Newcastle United and Middlesbrough fans react to Dwight Gayle transfer links

Newcastle United and Middlesbrough fans have been reacting on social media to the news that Magpies striker Dwight Gayle has been offered to the Championship club.

Gayle, who has been at Newcastle since 2016 and still has two years left on his contract at St James' Park, has been told to train with the club's Academy players. Eddie Howe plans on bringing a new striker to the club this summer.

The forward has scored 34 goals in 122 Newcastle appearances, but he only played 30 minutes of Premier League action last season. Chronicle Live understands that Gayle does have interest from other Championship clubs, but the striker's representatives have already been in discussions with Middlesbrough over a move to Chris Wilder's side.

Here's how Newcastle fans on social media reacted to the news:

Kenneth Kenny Johnson: "Let’s be honest, he’s 32 and hasn’t really been any good in the Premiership. Would make a great addition to any Championship side."

Stephen Robbo Robinson: "Let’s be honest, he’s never had a future for the past 2-3 seasons."

Dom Steerment: "Our hero in the Championship. Can't say a bad word about him, not been given a chance in the Prem."

Maurice William Curran: "TBH, Dwight never got a chance. He is a good striker, has a leap like a salmon. The lad needs game-time and if that means moving on, then I wish him all the best at his new club."

John Robinson: "He's had no future for the past 2 seasons. Should have been offloaded a long time ago. Lazy player, he's happy warming the bench stealing a massive underserved salary."

Glen Hobbs: "He was only ever good for the Championship. Think he needs to go back there."

Mike Raisbeck: "He needs to move on."

And here's how Middlesbrough fans have reacted to the news:

@_mstephenson88: "I'd take him, track record at Championship level, would seem a Wilder type striker too."

@smoggiec: "Great signing if we can pull it off."

Kallan Morrison: "No brainer for me. Yes he's 32, but he's a natural goal scorer and the chances we create per game under Chris Wilder would suit a player like Gayle down to the ground."

Peter Affleck: "His career is over. No good for Newcastle, no good for us."

Michael JD: "Type of striker we need... would be a top signing."
