‘He got enraged and started beating me’: Patient asks doctor simple question, gets brutally attacked in hospital bed instead

A doctor in India has been suspended after a video showed him allegedly attacking a patient who was lying in a hospital bed. The incident happened at Indira Gandhi Medical College in Shimla, northern India, and the footage quickly spread across social media.

According to the LAD Bible, Dr Raghav Narula, a senior resident doctor, is accused of assaulting 36-year-old patient Arjun Panwar. Panwar had been admitted to the hospital because he was having trouble breathing and had gone through several medical tests.

According to Panwar, the argument started when he was resting on a bed in the pulmonary ward after his tests. Dr Narula came over and asked him what he was doing there and where his test reports were, speaking in a very rude way.

The doctor claims he acted in self-defense

“As I was resting, Dr Raghav came and started questioning me about what I was doing there and where my medical test reports were. He spoke to me very rudely, and when I told him, ‘Is this the way you talk to your family members?’, the doctor got enraged and started beating me,” the patient claimed. Video footage shows Panwar lying on the hospital bed while the doctor appeared to hit him.

The video went viral online and angry locals gathered outside the hospital demanding action against the doctor. Dr Narula was suspended following the incident, according to IGMC Medical Superintendent Dr Rahul Rao. A full investigation is now underway, and police are also looking into the matter after Panwar filed a complaint.

However, Dr Narula has a different version of events. He claims the argument started because he used the Hindi word “tu” when speaking to Panwar. This word is an informal way of saying “you” and can be seen as disrespectful in some situations. This disturbing case adds to growing concerns about patient care and medical ethics in healthcare settings.

Dr Narula said he was simply asking if Panwar had been admitted to the hospital before because he looked familiar. The patient became angry about the informal language and started shouting. The doctor claims Panwar then insulted his family, used abusive language, and even tried to hit him with a nearby IV stand.

The doctor insists he was acting in self-defense and has worked at the hospital for eight years without any similar incidents. He says the video only shows part of what happened and that he suffered a fractured hand and back pain from the incident. Medical professionals facing serious allegations have become increasingly difficult to track down in recent controversies. Dr Narula told reporters he does not regret his actions.
