Hayden Coulson next on Aberdeen transfer list as Jim Goodwin eyes Middlesbrough defender

Aberdeen are keen on signing Middlesbrough defender Hayden Coulson on-loan. The 24-year-old is next on boss Jim Goodwin 's transfer list following the capture of Callum Roberts on Monday.

As revealed by Record Sport , the winger is the latest arrival at Pittodrie after the Dons agreed an undisclosed fee with National League club Notts County. But Goodwin isn't stopping there with a Premiership opener away at champions Celtic looming on Sunday. He's in the market for a left-back and Coulson has been identified as an option.

He's already had a previous spell in Scotland with St Mirren before moving on to Cambridge United, Ipswich Town and Peterborough in a series of loans. Now in the final year of his contract at the Riverside Stadium, the former England youth international looks set to leave Boro on-loan again. The move would give Goodwin more competition in the left-back area, where youngster Mason Hancock has impressed with Jack MacKenzie out injured.

Meanwhile, new boy Roberts has penned a three year contract with the Dons. The 25-year-old played alongside fellow Dons new boy Jayden Richardson, who was on loan at Notts County from Nottingham Forest last season. He previously had a loan spell at Kilmarnock when he was coming through the ranks at Newcastle United.

A delighted Goodwin said: “Callum is technically a very good player. He scored 16 goals last season for Notts County which is an impressive return. Jayden Richardson obviously knows him very well as they both played on the right-hand side for Notts County and were very successful together.

“I’ve spoken about the need for a bit more creativity and the good thing about Callum is that he can play off the right as a number 10 or also in central midfield as an attacking midfielder, so he gives us a number of different options. He’s a great age with good energy and pace and is another exciting one for the fans to look forward to.”

Aberdeen have made an unbeaten start to their Premier Sports campaign but will have to revamp their defence at the weekend as Liam Scales can’t play against his parent club, Celtic.
