Hawaii released axis deer for recreational hunting in the 1860s, but with few predators, the animals multiplied into tens of thousands, stripping vegetation, damaging farms and accelerating erosion across Maui

The introduction of a once-valued game species eventually became a serious invasive-species problem in Hawaii. The axis deer (Axis axis) are native to the Indian subcontinent, and in the 19th century, they were brought to Hawaii for recreational hunting. As the population of axis deer kept growing, this species spread across many islands in Hawaii, including the island of Maui, which offered plenty of food and a comfortable climate without any predators.
