Hawaii health officials have confirmed a ninth travel-related dengue case of 2026, this time in an Oahu resident who was infected while traveling in a region where the virus is common. The Hawaii Department of Health said it found no link between the new case and any earlier Hawaii cases, and state teams were sent to the affected area to inspect for mosquito breeding sites and carry out mosquito control, Maui Now reported. No local transmission has been reported, and officials expect the risk of local spread to be low.
The case is the second on Oahu within five days, following an eighth case announced Oct. 9. For households, the bigger concern is what happens after a sick traveler returns home. Hawaii has Aedes mosquitoes capable of carrying dengue, so an infected person bitten at home could pass the virus to local mosquitoes, especially after a rainy week that left standing water in yards, Hawaii News Now reported.
