Havertz return, Lukaku choice - The Chelsea starting XI Thomas Tuchel should pick vs Brighton

Chelsea take on Brighton for the second time in less than a month, as the Blues travel to the Amex on Tuesday evening.

Thomas Tuchel has no new injury worries but is unable to welcome any players back for the trip to the south coast.

The German coach will have plenty to ponder given his recent switching between a back three and back four, while Chelsea were unable to effectively connect with Romelu Lukaku in defeat to Premier League leaders Manchester City at the weekend.

Tuchel was asked whether the team need to do more to accomodate the Belgian.

He said: "No, I think we do everything to help him. I think it's the wrong question because it's focusing on one player. He is a key player and we want him to be a key play but for me, I think it is the wrong approach.

"This is what we do for any player. This is a team sport and it's not about ten players serving one player. It is not Chelsea and it is not football. Every player is there to serve the team. This is the highest principle and won't change."

With the likes of Mason Mount and Kai Havertz on the bench at the Etihad, there are sure to be a number of stars knocking on Tuchel's door to start against Brighton.

Another game and another selection dilemma for Thomas Tuchel as Chelsea take on Brighton in the Premier League.

The Blues head coach will have his grumbles about the rescheduling of this game to a Tuesday night, owing to Chelsea’s participation in the Club World Cup next month.

No fresh injuries were sustained in the 1-0 defeat to Man City at the weekend but there will be no players from the sidelines returning either. Trevor Chalobah and Andreas Christensen are both out, while long-term absentees Reece James and Ben Chilwell are also out.

Tuchel could revert to a back four for the visit to Brighton, who caused them untold problems at the back end of last year when Chelsea were lucky to escape with a draw at Stamford Bridge.

Tariq Lamptey, the former Blues academy star, should be included for the home side on the south coast and that could see a second straight start for Malang Sarr, especially after Marcos Alonso was ran ragged by Raheen Sterling on Saturday.

Mason Mount is a shoo-in to return having been a substitute against City and he will replace either Christian Pulisic or Hakim Ziyech, who both underwhelmed in Manchester.

Timo Werner is also pushing for a recall while Kai Havertz, who hasn’t featured in the last two games, is pushing too.

Tuchel once again has decisions to make and in my team, the fresh Havertz comes into the lineup.

Sam’s team: Kepa; Azpilicueta, Silva, Rudiger, Sarr; Jorginho, Kante, Kovacic; Mount, Havertz, Lukaku.

The games keep coming for Chelsea and we're sure to see some changes to Thomas Tuchel's side for the trip to Brighton.

Kepa Arrizabalaga will obviously start in goal but with the success Tariq Lamptey had on Brighton's right wing at Stamford Bridge, the more defensive oriented Malang Sarr at left back could be considered by Tuchel.

The Frenchman could also start as a central defender in a back three but the familiarity of Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger could be the strongest trio.

They could be flanked by Christian Pulisic and Marcos Alonso, with Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho ahead of them in the centre of the pitch. N'Golo Kante's fitness will be key going forward so to make use of him from the bench may be sensible given his struggles this season.

Romelu Lukaku should start up front after finding the net on his last outing against the Seagulls, and more pitchtime will hopefully increase the Blues' effectiveness operating with the Belgian forward.

Mason Mount must return to the side and after two consecutive matches on the bench getting Kai Havertz some minutes from the start may be wise.

Scott's team: Kepa; Azpilicueta, Silva, Rudiger; Pulisic, Kovacic, Jorginho, Alonso, Mount, Lukaku, Havertz.
