'Haunted Chocolatier' Update: ConcernedApe Explains Why 'Stardew Valley' Successor Is Taking Longer

Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone has reassured fans that development on "Haunted Chocolatier" is still progressing, even if the highly anticipated life simulation game is taking longer than expected.

In a new blog post, the creator of "Stardew Valley" explained that his focus remains on delivering a polished experience rather than rushing toward a release date.

Although the latest update does not include new gameplay footage or a launch window, it provides insight into why development has been slower than many players anticipated.

ConcernedApe Prioritizes Quality Over Speed

Barone opened the blog with a straightforward message: "Yep. I'm still working on the game." He acknowledged that repeatedly assuring fans the project is still in development may seem repetitive, but said it reflects the current reality of the game's progress.

According to Barone, every feature that players use frequently must feel seamless, intuitive, visually appealing, and satisfying before it is considered finished. Rather than simply adding content, he is carefully refining each mechanic to ensure it meets his own high standards.

For many fans, this perfectionist approach mirrors the philosophy that helped make "Stardew Valley" one of the most successful indie games of all time.

Recipe Book Receives Extensive Redesign

One of the biggest focuses during development is the game's recipe book, which players will use to craft chocolates throughout their adventure.

According to GameRant, Barone revealed that he has repeatedly redesigned the interface to improve usability. His work includes reducing unnecessary clicks, organizing information more effectively, refining the menu layout, and creating a smoother daily workflow for players.

While these adjustments may appear minor individually, he believes they will have a significant impact because the recipe book is a system players will interact with regularly.

'Stardew Valley' 1.7 Is Not the Main Cause of the Delay

Barone also addressed ongoing concerns about balancing work on "Haunted Chocolatier" with the upcoming "Stardew Valley" 1.7 update.

He previously explained that he now takes more of a creative director role for "Stardew Valley," while a small team assists with development. This allows him to devote most of his attention to "Haunted Chocolatier," although he still personally reviews content and handles key creative elements such as music.

Notably, earlier reports claiming that version 1.7 would introduce a new farm type or make Clint and Sandy romance options have not been officially confirmed by ConcernedApe and should be treated as speculation.

Why Fans Haven't Seen More of the Game

Barone also explained why he remains cautious about revealing new features before launch.

During development, ideas frequently change or are removed entirely. Showing unfinished content too early could create expectations that the final game may not meet.

For that reason, he prefers to share updates only when features are much closer to completion.
