Notts County's dreams of a return to the Football League are over for another season as they suffered a third consecutive loss in the play-offs with an extra-time defeat against Grimsby.
Mani Dieseruvwe broke the Magpies' hearts as he prodded in with just two minutes remaining after Notts had failed to deal with a set-piece as Paul Hurst's side booked a semi-final showdown with Wrexham.
Notts had actually looked on course for victory in normal time after Ruben Rodrigues had scored from the penalty spot after Jordan Cropper had handled his shot.
But in the seventh minute of stoppage time, Jayden Richardson committed a needless foul right on the edge of the box which saw Grimsby send goalkeeper Max Crocombe up into the area.
He got a vital touch as a scramble ensued allowing Gavin Holohan to net a dramatic equaliser. Both sides searched for a winner but it was Dieseruvwe who had the final say as Notts were consigned to another season in the National League.
Here are the player ratings from their defeat to the Mariners.
Sam Slocombe: Had very little to do in the first half despite Grimsby being the better side in possession. Fired one kick straight to a Grimsby player. Handling was superb. 7
Jayden Richardson: Created the best chance of the game in the opening 45 minutes when he delivered a superb cross for Ruben Rodrigues. But conceded a needless free-kick which led to Grimsby's last-minute equaliser. Will haunt him. 5
Richard Brindley: Was rarely troubled in the first half and defended with a cool head when Grimsby had a sniff of Notts' penalty box. Calm and composed. 7
Alex Lacey: Like Brindley was largely comfortable and won plenty of his headers. You can see why Notts fans dub him a Rolls Royce. Was absolutely heroic as he produced two vital blocks. 8
Kyle Cameron: There were a couple of trademark runs from centre-back but he defended majestically at times and showed just what a signing he has been. 7
Adam Chicksen: Fired a couple of decent crosses into the box and was faced with a tricky customer in Erico Sousa but dealt with him superbly. 8
Matt Palmer: Took him a while but when he was on the ball invariably spotted the right pass. Battled away manfully against a Grimsby midfield led superbly by Ben Fox. 6
Jim O'Brien: Produced a crunching tackle on Sousa for which he was booked. Ratted around the centre of midfield in a bid to disrupt the Mariners. Was subbed. 6
Callum Roberts: His night was cruelly ended through injury in the 23rd minute and you could not help but feel sympathy for the ex-Newcastle winger. 5
Ruben Rodrigues: Headed the best chance of the first-half over the bar and scored the penalty that had Notts dreaming of a semi-final. 7
Kyle Wootton: Never really had a clear sniff of goal despite his tireless running. Lots of selfless running in what was a tough night for the forward. 6
Subs:
Eli Sam (Roberts 23): The forward was a real powerhouse. Showed real quality, but also moments when he needed to show more intelligence. 7
Ed Francis (O'Brien 65): Did okay when he came on. 5
Zak Brunt (Rodrigues 83): The midfielder was fetched on to help add creativity, but never worked. 5
