Hatchet buried? Ashes tradition flagged for restart

Steve Smith made one thing crystal clear at the end of his press conference after wrapping up a 4-1 Ashes series win.

The Australian captain made sure everyone knew the English team had been invited into the home dressing room for the customary post-series drink.

"We'll go back in the sheds - I think the English will come in for a drink," Smith said on Thursday when asked about celebration plans.

The tradition would usually pass without need for clarification but a flashpoint after the 2023 series left both teams with a sour taste.

Australian players reportedly asked numerous times to enter the English sheds after the final Test at The Oval, but the door was locked and the tourists were not let in.

England's team was then spotted coming out of the ground shortly after the Aussies had left.

With post-series drinks long being a tradition of international cricket, English sources later put the drama down to a misunderstanding over timings.

But this time around, the Aussie skipper was confident relations between the teams would be in better order.

"We've invited them in, at least, so hopefully they come in for a drink and then we'll see where the night takes us," Smith said.
