Haryana Congress gets back MLAs after 'salt-in-lota' oath

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Congress MLAs, who were camping in Chhattisgarh for the last week in view of the Rajya Sabha polls, were on Thursday asked to take an oath by putting salt in a 'lota' (utensil used to keep drinking water) to ensure they would vote in favour of Congress nominee Ajay Makan.

'Lota-Namak' is a tradition in Haryana and is usually used when a group, clan, or khap wants its people to unite on an issue. Under this practice, salt is mixed with water in a 'lota' and people are asked to take an oath to support the decision taken unanimously. It is believed that the body of oath-takers with that of their family will decay as salt decays in water if they break the oath. "We all are united and have taken an oath to ensure the victory of our candidate," Neeraj Sharma, Congress MLA from NIT, Faridabad told TOI earlier on Friday evening.
