Harvey Weinstein to be sentenced: what could happen next?

Harvey Weinstein will appear in court for sentencing today (February 23), after being found guilty of rape and sexual assault.

The once-powerful film mogul was found guilty of another two charges - third-degree rape and sexual assault - after the first historic trial in New York, which featured harrowing testimony from a number of accusers.

He has faced trial twice - once in New York and once in Los Angeles - and has always denied engaging in non-consensual sex.

After his second trial in October 2022, Weinstein was found guilty in December on three counts of rape and sexual assault against a European model and actor who testified anonymously as “Jane Doe 1”.

What was Harvey Weinstein accused of?

Initially, the former film producer faced allegations that he raped one woman in a hotel room in 2013 and performed a forcible sex act on another in 2006.

A flood of actresses and former colleagues - more than 80 - then made claims of sexual harassment or assault against him. This was known as the “Me Too” movement, which sparked women across industries worldwide to speak about inappropriate behaviour towards them.

Weinstein faced trial, was found guilty, and sentenced to 23 years behind bars.

What was Weinstein first charged with?

In May 2018, Weinsten was arrested and charged with rape and other offences. He was charged again last year and faced trial again on rape and sex-assault charges, this time in Los Angeles.

What happened in Weinstein’s second trial?

Four women testified in the LA case that he had raped or assaulted them in California. But, after a four-week trial, Weinstein was only convicted of charges based on one woman’s allegations.

What sentence could Weinstein face now?

He faces an additional 18 years in prison on top of the 23-year sentence he is already serving.

What happened to Weinstein’s film company?

The independent film company The Weinstein Company released joint founder and CEO Harvey Weinstein after the women came forward with accusations.

In 2018, The Weinstein Company declared bankruptcy following the collapse of a buyout deal.

In May 2018, it was announced company Lantern Capital had bought out the company.
