Harry Redknapp delivers verdict on Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku comparison ahead of London derby

Harry Redknapp has had his say on Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku as he compared the two strikers ahead of Tottenham's second trip of the month to Stamford Bridge.

Both players have faced criticism this season, with some inconsistent form from the goalscorers who their teams often rely on for goals.

Chelsea are currently third in the table, after winning 12 of their 23 games so far and Tottenham are eight points behind them, but have four games in hand on Thomas Tuchel's side.

The London rivals play each other at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, which will be the third game of the month between the two sides.

The first two fixtures were in the Carabao Cup semi-final, which the Blues won on an aggregate score of 3-0, but Lukaku wasn't one of the goalscorers.

There are high expectations for both strikers which is why, when they aren't performing as well as expected, questions are asked.

In their pre-match press conferences, ahead of the weekend fixture at Stamford Bridge, both managers were asked about their strikers.

"We are in the spotlight, we are judged all of us and that’s daily business," Tuchel said when asked about Luaku being under the spotlight after ever game. "If you are a decisive player, if things go very well, people talk about you.

"If not, the same people talk about you. This is part of the business, like it or not. Nothing more to say."

"Harry has shown to the club a great commitment and he shows every day a great attitude, a great behaviour and we are talking about a world class striker and a fantastic player," Antonio Conte said on Kane.

"If you saw the goal he scored against Leicester the assist he made for the [Steven] Bergwijn goal, you understand the quality and the value of this player.

"Apart from this we are talking about a really good guy, an honest person and a person who wants to work hard to improve. You can think this is normal but sometimes you can find players with great talent but lazy but doesn't want to put themselves to the service of the team.

"Instead Harry has all this quality. I am really surprised in a positive way to see this characteristic of the play."

This season, Kane has featured in a few more games than Lukaku, with both strikers scoring five Premier League goals. The England captain has had 60 shots at goal and the Belgian has had just 25.

Kane has faced some criticism for playing in a slightly deeper role, which he has had to do to add some creativity in front of goal during some matches. However, it has meant he has created seven big chances for his side, whilst the Blues' striker has created just three.

Redknapp also compared the two strikers and gave praise to Kane, although he still "fancies Chelsea" for the London derby on Sunday.

"Harry Kane was fantastic the other night against Leicester," the former Spurs boss explained on talkSPORT. "His general play and the goal was absolutely top draw, what a finish.

"There's no comparison between the two front men. Harry Kane is on another level to Lukaku."

The bold statement from Redknapp came after the strikers were being compared and Lukaku was being criticised for his failure to keep the ball on occasions during Chelsea's draw against Brighton.

At the King Power Stadium Kane's display involved a lot of movement, retrieving the ball from various areas of the pitch and trying to get it forward, which ended in him picking up a goal and an assist.

Saying that, Lukaku has a better goals per match score (0.33) than Kane (0.26) and less minutes per goal (200), than the England captain (305).

Whatever opinions are formed or questions are asked regarding the strikers, they will both hope to contribute more goals to their side as the season goes on, which can start when they next come up against each other on Sunday.
