Harry Maguire set to emulate Manchester United legends with England milestone at World Cup

Manchester United's Harry Maguire is set to make his 50th cap for England against the United States of America on Friday.

Maguire, 29, has made just three starts in the Premier League this season and two of those came in defeats against Brighton and Brentford, but that hasn't stopped Gareth Southgate from continuing to show unwavering support for the player.

Southgate has relied on Maguire throughout his England tenure and the centre-back was excellent at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, while he was also named in the Team of the Tournament at Euro 2020, with the Three Lions making the final.

Maguire was called up to the England squad again for the Qatar World Cup, as expected, but Southgate started him against Iran for the opening group match earlier this week and the United captain is set to retain that role against the USA.

Should Maguire start on Friday night, he will join an elusive set of players by making his 50th appearance for England. Wayne Rooney is the player who has made the most caps for England, having represented United, and that full list is attached below.

United players with 50 or more England caps:

  • 120 - Wayne Rooney
  • 115 - David Beckham
  • 106 - Sir Bobby Charlton
  • 90 - Bryan Robson
  • 89 - Michael Owen
  • 85 - Gary Neville
  • 84 - Ray Wilkins
  • 81 - Rio Ferdinand
  • 66 - Paul Scholes
  • 59 - Peter Beardsley
  • 59 - Phil Neville
  • 53 - Paul Ince
  • 51 - Teddy Sheringham

Maguire has the opportunity to surpass Sheringham (51) and Ince (53) at this World Cup, depending on England's performance.

The centre-back was praised for his display against Iran and he came close to scoring with a header in the first half.
