Harry Kane believes Bayern Munich are “one of the favourites” for the Champions League title this season after scoring his first European goal for the club in Wednesday night’s 4-3 win over Manchester United.
The England captain has now notched five times in his opening six games for Bayern across all competitions since signing from Tottenham in the summer.
He got off the mark in the Champions League by assisting a Leroy Sane goal and then scoring a penalty against United in a lively Group A encounter at the Allianz Arena.
“It was a crazy finish — a bit frantic at the end”, Kane said. “Overall, we controlled the possession.
“We just lost a bit of concentration in the last five minutes, but thankfully we were able to hold onto the lead. It’s a really good start to the campaign against a tough side in Man United.
“It’s always great to score, but we know we can improve in certain areas. We’re building towards that.
“It’s always exciting to play with [good attackers]. I still feel like we’re getting to know each other a little bit. It’s only been a few weeks, so let’s see what happens.”
Kane has made no secret of the fact that he wants to win the first trophies of his career for Bayern, who spent £86.4million plus add-ons to prise him away from Spurs after almost two decades in a high-profile summer deal.
“Whenever there’s a big price tag on your name, there’s a bit of expectation and you want to repay the club,” he said. “It’s been really good to start the way I have.
“This is a big competition and, for sure, we’re one of the favourites. There are not many teams around Europe who will look at our team and want to play us.”
Struggling United have now lost three matches on the bounce, and Kane said: “They’re obviously going through a difficult spell and suffering with some injuries as well. They’re a team with a lot of talent. They can turn games around really quickly. I’m sure they’ll improve, but I’m more focused on myself.”
