Harry Kane sends message to England fans after World Cup penalty miss in France defeat

Harry Kane has stated he is using the experience of his England penalty miss against France "to be mentally and physically stronger for the next challenge". Trailing 2-1 in the closing stages of their World Cup quarter-final clash in Qatar, the Three Lions were handed a glorious opportunity to restore parity after Mason Mount was barged over in the area.

Fresh from already scoring a penalty past Tottenham teammate Hugo Lloris, Kane stepped up once again but this time blazed his penalty over the crossbar. The miss ultimately proved costly with England unable to find a second goal in the remaining minutes of the contest, with France prevailing and going through to set up a semi-final clash against Morocco on Wednesday evening.

Dropping to his haunches at the full-time whistle and looking disconsolate, Kane was immediately consoled by his England teammates and Lloris following their World Cup exit. Taking to social media on Sunday morning, the 29-year-old opened up on his miss and made it clear that he takes responsibility.

"Absolutely gutted. We’ve given it everything and it’s come down to a small detail which I take responsibility for. There’s no hiding from it, it hurts and it’ll take some time to get over it but that’s part of sport." wrote Kane on his Instagram account.

"Now it’s about using the experience to be mentally and physically stronger for the next challenge. Thanks for all the support throughout the tournament - it means a lot."
