Harry Kane sends message after England World Cup win and ankle injury scare vs Iran

England got off to the best possible start in their World Cup campaign beating Iran 6-2, but Gareth Southgate could be faced with some bad news with captain Harry Kane possibly suffering an ankle injury in the second half of the victory.

The Spurs striker won a free kick on the edge of the box early in the second half after he was fouled by an Morteza Pouraliganji who appeared to trap Kane's right ankle rolling over after being caught between the Iran players outstretched leg and the turf.

Kane, who has had a history of ankle problems, received treatment but was able to carry on before being replaced by Callum Wilson 15 minutes from time.

The withdrawal of Kane was perhaps not too much of a surprise with Southgate choosing to replace all of his starting attackers in the second 45, but Antonio Conte's star forward was spotted leaving the stadium through the mixed zone with some heavy strapping on the ankle that Kane went down clutching in the game.

Following the victory, Kane posted a video to Twitter of his thoughts on the win, with no mention of a possible injury which could be seen as a positive or negative ahead of England's second group stage fixture against the USA on Friday.

In the video, Kane said: "Obviously a really good start to the World Cup campaign. Full credit to the boys, it's never easy getting off to a winning start at a major tournament and scoring six goals shows we're in a good place. There's still a lot of work to do of course, we know there's a long way to go.

"Overall, really pleasing. Congrats to Jude [Bellingham] for his first England goal, there's no better place to do it.

"Bukayo [Saka] on fire with two great finishes. Everyone out there today did their country proud and we move on to the next one!

"Thanks for all the support back home and here in the stadium as well. Let's keep it going for the next game against the USA."
