Harry Kane injury update emerges with Newcastle star Callum Wilson on England standby

England captain Harry Kane looks set to play a part in Friday's clash with the USA despite suffering an injury scare in the 6-2 win over Iran. The Tottenham striker took a knock to the ankle before being replaced by Newcastle United's Callum Wilson in the second-half of the World Cup opener for the Three Lions.

Kane was due to undergo a scan on Wednesday as England chiefs worried over a potential Qatar setback. However, the forward looks to have escaped relatively unscathed and England are now hopeful he will be in action later this week.

“I think he is good, probably just a little bit sore,” England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford told the media on Wednesday. “I’m sure he is fine, he was out on the grass with us today which is good. He is our captain.”

Wilson had been on standby for a potential start against the USA after coming off the bench and helping himself to an assist in the Iran victory. The Newcastle favourite is hopeful of more minutes after his flying start on the world stage.

"As a player, as a striker you get given an opportunity, you're coming away, you have to be ready to take it whether you're first choice, second choice or third choice," Wilson said after the opening game win. "There are players in the past, famous strikers you know, that didn't play a minute in the group games and ended up becoming a hero and scoring in a World Cup final.

"So it's a squad at the end of the day, it's about the team and you just have to be ready when the opportunity arises. When you get given an opportunity, you have to make sure that you try and grasp it with both hands.

"We were winning the game, we were able to make a substitution, I came on and had a goal contribution, which is nice to add to the victory."
