Harry Kane hailed Tammy Abraham as a “great player” after the striker’s brilliant first season at Roma.
After struggling for regular game time under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea, the signing of Romelu Lukaku afforded the 24-year-old the chance to move elsewhere last summer.
While the England forward was linked with what appeared to be a more natural move to another Premier League side, it was Roma who shelled out £34m to bring him to the Italian capital.
Putting the disappointment of missing England’s Euro 2020 squad behind him, Abraham scored 27 goals in 53 club appearances across all competitions during a prolific first season in Serie A.
Working his way back into Gareth Southgate’s plans, Abraham currently looks like the most realistic option in the England squad to offer an alternative to Kane, particularly with Dominic Calvert-Lewin struggling for form and fitness at Everton.
Speaking to talkSPORT ahead of Saturday’s defeat to Hungary, Kane talked up the need to have competition.
“I think that Tammy is a great player,” he said.
“He’s had a fantastic season at club level, he’s still learning and has experience to gain but every time he comes here he works hard and trains hard.
“He wants to impress the manager, he wants to score goals and of course it’s great to have competition in every position and in the Premier League we have some great English strikers who are scoring goals on a regular basis.
“Tammy is doing that for Roma as well so he’s a great player and I’m sure he’ll want to keep improving, keep working hard and that’s what he’ll try and do in this camp and going back to club level as well.”
