Harry Kane explains exactly what Tottenham must do to make Antonio Conte happy

Harry Kane has called on Tottenham to grind out results when they are not playing well.

In a good position to challenge for a Champions League place after two seasons out of Europe's premier competition, inconsistency has plagued Spurs so far in 2022 and it has seen them fail to take control in the top-four battle.

Following the team's brilliant 3-2 win at champions Man City two weeks ago, Antonio Conte's men followed it up with a 1-0 defeat away at Burnley and it culminated in the head coach questioning his own future.

The same then happened again with Middlesbrough knocking Tottenham out of the FA Cup last week three days after their 4-0 triumph at Leeds.

Needing to string a set of wins together in the final few months if they are to pip their rivals to a top-four finish and keep Conte happy, Kane has outlined what the team must do if they are to improve.

"Consistency is definitely something that we need to improve on as a team," said the striker in Tottenham's official matchday programme. "But it's hard to put your finger on the solution - it's not something that can be fixed with the flick of a switch.

"It takes time, it takes training, working hard every day on the training pitch and trying to make sure we have a standard, no matter if we're with or without the ball. We need to make sure we're being 100 per cent aggressive and making it hard for the opposition.

"And it is also about making sure we grind out results when we're not playing as well, picking up the 1-0s, coming off the pitch thinking 'we could have lost that, but we ended up winning!' That's what the top, top teams do, so we need to find a way to bring that into our game!"

In the recent 4-0 win at Leeds both Kane and Son Heung-min created Premier League history as they combined for the the 37th time in the league.

Forming such a prolific partnership in their seven years together in north London, the England captain has opened up on why his partnership with the attacker is so special.

"We've been playing together now for a long time, and we just complement each other's games well - especially in the last few years in terms of me dropping deep," he added. "Sonny knows if I'm dropping deep and getting on the ball, he needs to run, find the space and then I should be able to find him. It's worked really well for us and the team.

"But that obviously comes from training with each other every day, seeing each other every day. We have a good relationship and a good personal relationship as well. We understand each other really well.

"It's like anything. You train and work hard on certain things, try to improve as players and from that, you're going to improve. Our understanding has got better and better over the years and hopefully it continues. Sonny and I still have a lot to improve on in our eyes and that is our aim as a partnership.

"When you look through our goals, there are a few that are really special. I think one of my best assists for Sonny was at Wembley against Huddersfield (March, 2018). I think I was on the right wing. l played a kind of cross-pass which was perfect for him and he headed it home.

"I think the one against Leeds was a really special goal for us and it was great that it was that one that broke the record. Just the movement, the pass, Sonny's touch and finish. That was a really nice goal and a great one to break the record with.

"In terms of goals where he's set me up, I think of the Arsenal one when we beat them here last season (December, 2020). That was a nice goal. He had the ball on the left, took a touch inside, Iran behind him, he then played me in, and I was able to finish it off.

"There are plenty of our goals which are great to watch and that just shows the partnership we have. Like always, we're looking to score and assist more and hopefully we can have a few more before we're finished."
