Harry Kane aiming for Ballon d’Or challenge after swapping Tottenham for Bayern Munich trophy hunt

Harry Kane believes he can become a serious contender for the Ballon d’Or award at Bayern Munich.

Kane left Tottenham last week after 19 years at the club, joining German giants Bayern on a four-year deal.

The move pocketed Spurs £86.4million, and that fee could rise to almost £100m with add-ons.

The 30-year-old made the move to try and win his first senior trophy as a player, but personal accolades also motivate Tottenham and England’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Kane said: “If you are winning your league and the Champions League, and obviously we as England have the European Championship next summer as well — as we’ve seen with the Ballon d’Or, you have to be winning team trophies to achieve that.

“If I’m scoring goals and we are winning trophies then that will come into question, but it is not really what my focus is on now.”

Kane came 10th in Ballon d’Or voting in both 2017 and 2018, placed 23rd in 2021 and finished 21st last year. The award, run by French magazine France Football, is voted for by a single journalist from each of FIFA’s 100 top-ranked nations.

Speaking about his career, Kane added: “I have always said I never want to retire and feel like I could have done more. That was a big part of the decision-making process to come to Bayern. You want to make sure you’ve pushed yourself to your limits.

“If you don’t win or perform well at Bayern Munich, there are going to be question marks over you. I have been able to handle that over my career, whether it is with Tottenham or England.”

The England captain is in line to make his Bundesliga debut on Friday night, when Bayern begin their latest title defence at Werder Bremen.
