Further filming took place in Leeds, Bolton, Bradford and Kirklees. Some locations were used in the series as what they are used for in real life, including Holdsworth House Hotel.
In Leeds, Leeds City Railway Station and the exterior of Kirkgate Market were used. The Piazza shopping centre and Greenhead Park in Huddersfield were also used for filming.
Sally Wainwright, the writer, creator and executive producer of Happy Valley, explained how the area helped her to come up with the name Happy Valley. She said: "So Happy Valley... I always work closely with police advisors, who are old police officers who have worked in the area, and one of them told me that is what they call the Valley because of issues with drugs. For me it reflected the show. It’s dark, but it has also got a lot of humour in it."
James Norton, who plays Tommy Lee Royce, also spoke about filming in the area. He said: "I was really proud when I went to America and I realised how far reaching the show is. I think it’s such a specific show about a very specific part of England, and you know the accents and the temperaments and sensibilities of those characters are quite specific to the area."
Happy Valley continues on BBC One at 9pm on Sunday, January 22.
