Hamburg fans were left red faced after invading the pitch to celebrate promotion only for Heidenheim to score a 99th minute winner to put them into the play-off.
The Bundesliga 2 side will now play Stuttgart, who finished 16th in the top division, in the play-off to see who will play against the likes of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund next season. Heidenheim launched an incredible comeback to book their place in Bundesliga 1 for the first time in their history. Jahn Regensburg went 2-0 up against Heidenheim, while Hamburg took an early lead against Sandhausen. Any dropped points by Frank Schmidt's side and Hamburg were automatically promoted, however Benedikt Saller's own goal in the 58th minute put the comeback in motion.
Hamburg eventually secured the three points with a 1-0 win which led to their fans invading the pitch to celebrate with their heroes, however the Heidenheim game was still going on. Just seconds later Jan-Niklas Beste equalised in the 93rd minute before Tim Kleindienst slotted home the winner in the 99th minute to send the Baden-Wurttemberg side up.
Some Hamburg fans were seen wiping away tears on the pitch after the late drama. If they fail to get past Stuttgart then it will be a sixth straight season in the second tier.
The drama a level below matched that of the top flight on Saturday. Dortmund managed to throw away the title with a 2-1 home defeat to Mainz as Bayern Munich hit a late winner at Koln.
