Half say they will bunk off work to watch a World Cup match

Almost half of England and Wales supporters plan to skive off work to watch their nation play at the World Cup, according to new research. With three of the daily kick-off times clashing with the traditional nine to five, fans will be forced to choose between football and work, and research carried out by Irish bookmaker Paddy Power reveals that 47% admit they intend to pull a sicky at some point during the tournament.

The English are even bigger culprits than their Welsh neighbours, with 47% of Three Lions fans planning a bunk-off, compared to 41% of those following the Dragons. The Paddy Power survey revealed that over one in 10 (13%) plan to deceive their boss for every game that there’s a clash.

Totally honest fans may be few and far between in England, but 15% of more honorable Three Lions supporters will be content with watching games from the office, rather than bunking off. Just 3% had the foresight to book annual leave so they can watch the matches.
