Let's focus on the numbers. In the 21 games Chelsea have played during the 2022/23 campaign thus far, Hakim Ziyech has featured for a total of 270 minutes. But in the four World Cup matches the winger has played for Morocco in Qatar, he has racked up 376 minutes. And there's more to come.
"He just looks like a happier player [with Morocco]," explained former Chelsea star Joe Cole ahead of the Atlas Lions' last-16 clash against Spain. "He’s had a very very difficult time at Chelsea, he’s not got any kind of rhythm to his game and he’s very much a rhythm type of player. He’s a technician, perhaps the Premier League doesn’t suit him. It's aggressive, up and down.
"When he was playing for Ajax in the Dutch league he could hug the touchline, the team could play through the lines, and give him the ball. He’s got a lovely left foot and he could come inside or deliver the ball. It hasn't worked for him [at Chelsea] but when we watch Ziyech here he’s playing with intensity and a smile on his face."

Ziyech's smile only grew wider at the Education City Stadium this evening as Morocco did what few thought was possible and eliminated Spain from the World Cup. An organised and spirited performance from the African side forced the match to penalties and in the shootout, goalkeeper Bono proved the hero as he saved spot-kicks from Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets.
The post-match celebrations were wild and jubilant – deservedly so. And Ziyech was front and centre on the pitch. The 29-year-old cut a very different figure to that seen at Stamford Bridge for much of the past 12 months. Here he appeared at ease, appreciated, and valued. Perhaps even understood.
For 120 minutes, Ziyech gave everything. He spent much of the contest forced back into his own defensive third as Spain dominated possession. Still, when he did get glimpses of the ball, he used it smartly and effectively. His technical quality remained clear in what was a dogged display.
Chelsea haven't seen enough of this Ziyech since his move from Ajax in the summer of 2020. Circumstances may mean those who follow the Blues never do. Given his lack of first-team football this term under first Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, it is no surprise the Moroccan will evaluate his future at Stamford Bridge following the World Cup.
AC Milan, who registered their interest the summer before opting to sign Charles De Ketelaere, have tentatively returned to the table ahead of the winter transfer window. Given Ziyech's performances at the World Cup, other clubs may pull up a seat alongside the Rossoneri.
A big decision awaits Ziyech in the weeks ahead; that much is clear with January firmly on the horizon. But for now, his focus must remain on making history with Morocco and keeping that smile on his face for as long as possible.
