Haiti's First Election in a Decade Slides to December — Just as Its Diaspora Loses Legal Ground in the U.S.

MIAMI, FL - MAY 13: People protest the possibility that the Trump administration may overturn the Temporary Protected Status for Haitians in front of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office on May 13, 2017 in Miami, Florida. 50,000 Haitians have been eligible for TPS and now the Trump administration has until May 23 to make a decision on extending TPS for Haitians or allowing it to expire on July 22 which would mean possibly deportation for the current TPS holders. A long-delayed vote gets a new date, while the community bankrolling Haiti's economy faces the end of its protected status back home

For most of this year, Haitians braced for an August 30 trip to the polls. That date is gone. Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council confirmed on July 27 that the first round of presidential and legislative voting — plus a constitutional referendum — will now happen December 13, with a second round and local elections following on February 21, 2027, and final results due out in March, according to reporting from the Haitian Times.
