Hairy Biker Dave Myers 'over the moon' to make TV return on Saturday Kitchen after chemotherapy

The Hairy Bikers' Dave Myers' return to TV following cancer treatment was greeted with cheers on BBC's Saturday Kitchen Live as he declared: "I'm over the moon to be back!"

Dave, one half of the much-loved duo, revealed that he had cancer back in May and was undergoing chemotherapy. On-screen partner Si King gave an update This Morning in October that Dave was "getting stronger every day"; and on Saturday morning, the pair made their first live appearance in quite some time, with both of them quite clearly delighted to be cooking together again.

And they marked their return with a Christmas treat, a coffee and hazelnut cake which Dave described as "so good for Christmas it's like the Angel Gabriel has wafted across your tonsils". When making the cake, he shared more with host Matt Tebbutt about his ongoing rehabilitation.

Dave said: " It’s lovely to be back, it’s been a rough year Matt and I can’t pretend otherwise, and there were some times I didn’t think I’d be here for Christmas. I’ve got to give a shout out to the doctors and nurses in Birmingham who put me back together and the rehabilitation people at the Circle [hospital] have got me walking again.

"And there’s a nurse Marion, who before my chemo would bring me cake in, she makes the best banana bread ever! A nd Si’s been looking after me, filling my freezer full of mince and dumplings."

While making the coffee and hazelnut cake, Dave revealed that he's still having chemotherapy, saying: "I've eaten a lot of cake this year, so I've been at home and it's been a good laugh.

"Well, no, no, chemotherapy's not funny. I'm still having it you know," to which Si responded: "You're doing well on it though."

His hair is also growing back, which his wife describes as "the colour of a dormouse". In high spirits throughout the show, Dave also complimented chef Ollie Dabbous' butternut squash and smoked almond parcel with spiced lentils and coconut yoghurt, saying: "It's absolutely stunning, it's such a beautiful balanced dish."

Though Si went down a different road, saying: "You know when it's in a parcel it always reminds me of a posh Greggs, you know what I mean? But it's absolutely class; really, really beautiful."

Dave and Si will return to our screens next year with their new series The Hairy Bikers Go Local on BBC Two. The first episode is due to air on January 3 2023.
