Hairdressing tips: Expert says we're all been washing our hair wrong

A hairdressers says we are all washing our locks wrong. In a video uploaded to TikTok, VenturaHair claims to reveal the 'proper way you should be shampooing your hair' - but it's sparked a big debate.

The video takes you through, step-by-step starting with the wetting of the hair, which needs to be thorough, really soaking the hair. Once your hair is wet enough, you will need to grab your shampoo but before putting it on your hair you will need to lather it up on your hands.

You then should be scrubbing the shampoo into the head really thoroughly, making sure to catch all areas even the nape of the neck, which many people can forget. Now the next step may raise a few eyebrows, but once you have rinsed the shampoo out, you then get your shampoo bottle again and do another wash through with shampoo.

The video explains the reason behind the double shampoo is that the first doesn’t actually wash the hair, it only opens the hair cuticles while the second wash then removes all the dirt and grease from the strands.

People in the comments didn’t seem too surprised at the need for a double shampoo, more at the fact that not everyone knows you should do two rounds with the shampoo. One such commenter said: “I always get so shocked when people don’t double shampoo, I wash my hair every 5-7 days so it’s just standard to do 2 shampoos for me.”

Another said “More people do it!? OMG I’m so glad I’m not the only one!!”

Before conditioning, the TikToker says you should squeeze any excess water in the hair out. You should then only apply conditioner to the ends, not the roots as they can make the hair greasy. Massage your scalp to close the hair cuticles that were opened during the first shampoo wash, allowing the hair to grow and increase in thickness.

Give the hair one final rinse and use cold water as it will allow those hair cuticles to close completely. The video is very in depth and very helpful to those who may not already be doing this process.
