Hairdresser reveals worst mistakes people make – including when brushing hair

A hairdresser has shared the secret to shiny, healthy locks. Taking to TikTok to set the record straight, an employee at Emmie Hair salon in Perth, Scotland, has shared five tips you need to know.

Chantel Northcott, a stylist in the salon, shared the tips with their 7,600 followers, and the post has received 100s of comments.

Firstly, the stylist says to not use supermarket shampoos and to use professional products instead. A skincare expert recently shared with The Mirror which ingredients you should be looking out for when it comes to buying shampoo, including Isopropyl Alcohol and Propylene Glycol which can cause drying and breakages.

Secondly, if you've been combing your wet hair with your normal brush, you've been doing it all wrong. Chantel explained that you should "only brush wet hair with a tangle teezer". Incorrectly brushing your hair could lead to more harm than good.

Chantel then added that you should always be shampooing your hair twice. A hairdresser previously shared that the first time breaks down oils and product, and the second time it actually does what it says on the bottle.

Next, the stylist says that a heat protector is a must, and is often something that is forgotten. Earlier in the year, a hairdresser conducted an experiment to demonstrate why this is so important. Using a strip of paper, the effects of heat damaged could be seen instantly.

Lastly, Chantel recommends using silk scrunchies when tying your hair up, as they are much more gentle on the hair.

Some commenters remarked that the cost of living crisis makes it harder to invest in quality products, with one person saying: "Of course you would say this. Salons want you to buy their ridiculously expensive [products that] do nothing. Have to buy more often if you wash. your hair twice," but the Emmie Hair Salon responded: "The shampoo shown in this video is £12. Professional products don't need to be expensive, and a little goes a long way".

Others were thankful for the advice, with one person saying: "Finally a hairdresser that gives correct advice."

Another simply said: "Amazing tips," and a third added: "That's the shampoo I use and my hair is great."
