Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu has warned that the 2026 Formula 1 season will test the limits of the American outfit.
Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, Komatsu is looking at the upcoming season as simply a continuation of his rebuilding of the team after he took over the role from former team chief Guenther Steiner. Since he took charge, he's applied a focus to improving internal processes and communication, something that he hopes will help the team as F1 sees a substantial regulations overhaul.
"Coming season, no doubt it’s going to be a tough season,” Komatsu said. “We are still the smallest team, we’re making lots of improvement I think in terms of the way we support each other, help each other moving with the common goal, it’s really good, we are becoming a good team.
"But still we are the smallest team, so the huge regulation change, we are up against it.”
Responding to the suggestion Haas could arrive at the first test and be quickest, Komatsu said: “I don’t like to keep hoping because if you just keep hoping, you don’t achieve anything.”
He continued: “You've got to be able to do something substantial. You cannot just say, ‘Oh, this year was really bad. Forget about it. Next year will be good.' What have you done to make it?"
The conversation moved to the Williams team. After struggling at the bottom of the grid, under the guidance of James Vowles it has seen multiple podium finishes and an impressive fifth place in the constructors' standings last year - proof that a small team can certainly turn it around.
"But Williams and us are totally different teams, right?" Komatsu responded. "Williams is actually a very big team. They've got like 1000 people, and then they’ve got most of the things that’s available to them.
“But the guys have done an amazing job. Hats off to them.
“So we've got to gradually build up those kind of resources as well… So it’s a totally different environment. But each of the 10 teams from next year - 11 teams - everybody’s got a different environment, right.
“So the way to success for each team is different.
He concluded: "But then the good thing about our team is we've got good people, great people, really great synergy, and then we are pure race team.
“We focus on what we need to achieve, and then we just really try to be inclusive, support each other.”
