Gym that's not 'intimidating' opens in Arnold

A new private members gym has opened its doors in a former warehouse in Arnold after a four-month transformation.

TGS Fitness Studio, in Nottingham Road, will have membership for just 200 people and no more than 15 allowed in at any one session.

It marks the third venue for Keeley and Mark Bowker, who started off selling exercise equipment to other gyms seven years ago.

Keeley said people's perceptions of gyms had changed dramatically since the start of Covid and lockdowns.

"Obviously there's a huge impact on mental health because of the benefits of physical exercise but also the realisation that keeping your body fit and healthy in general should be a priority.

"Being fit and healthy has a huge impact on your immune system and the way your body reacts to everyday elements and with people who are generally unfit suffering more from the impacts of the virus, we have seen people who were not into fitness before, and have not ever had any interest in fitness, have now started to take health and fitness more seriously and include it in their daily routine however small the inclusion.

Their first fitness studio launched in Hollinwood Lane, Calverton, starting with exercise classes and then evolved into a gym in March 2020 just before Covid hit the UK and the first lockdown.

It was finally allowed to reopen in April 2021 and at the same time the couple launched a second studio at Eaton Place, Bingham.

Keeley said: "Initially it was a showcase for our equipment but then we realised we're quite good at it and can help people on their fitness journey as well building gyms for other people."

The new Arnold gym, which costs £35 a month to join, is manned 50 percent of the time and the rest of the time members will have a pin number to access the building.

Operating seven days a week, the gym will be open early morning until late.

"We will only ever have 15 people in the club at any one time to make sure we can adhere to social distancing and also we can make sure everyone can get on the kit they want to and aren't queuing for things," said Keeley.

"We don't do any classes (at Arnold) but we have a full range of equipment - everything you need for a full body workout. We will be doing some micro PT sessions and there will be some personal trainers on site as well.

"We have an app clients download and they access their gym sessions through that so they have to book their gym sessions. Because we are a private members club I ask everyone to treat the gym as their own. I like to personally meet everybody," added Keeley.

"We've got two other clubs as well so we know that it works well."

The building was previously used by a maintenance service.

Goktan Sendervent, of G Property Services, who negotiated the lease, said: "It's great to have a beautifully kitted out gym centrally located in Arnold.

"Unlike big gyms that can often be intimidating especially if you're new to exercise, the gym is the perfect size.

"Mark and Keeley are passionate about the mental and physical benefits of exercise which will no doubt be a great motivation to people joining."
