My mother, Gwen Singleton, who has died aged 84, was a television journalist and researcher who worked for more than 30 years at Yorkshire Television, making an important contribution to its current affairs, science and education programmes.
Gwen began her television career in the early 1970s as a reporter on YTV’s Calendar programme. At a time when few women worked in television news, she quickly earned respect, despite being underestimated by some colleagues for being a young, softly spoken woman with a “posh” accent. She soon proved her abilities, notably securing an important interview with the Leeds United manager Don Revie.
