Gunshots fired at wedding party of more than 100 guests in 'totally reckless attack'

Police have launched a major investigation after gunshots were fired at a wedding party of more than 100 guests over the weekend.

Officers swarmed the scene in Merridale, Wolverhampton at around 9.30pm on Saturday after receiving "a number of calls".

A car is believed to have driven up to the back of the venue, the Gujarati Association, before the attacker got out and fired several shots towards a parked vehicle.

Shots are thought to have been fired back from the direction of the wedding party by another person, said West Midlands Police.

No one is believed to have been injured, but a car was damaged and will be forensically examined, added the force.

It is understood that no arrests have been made at this stage.

Ch Insp Paul Southern, of Wolverhampton Police, condemned the "totally reckless attack", saying officers will be carrying out extra patrols to reassure the community.

He said: "This was a totally reckless attack and it's by luck rather than by design that no one was seriously injured or killed.

"We believe there were more than 100 people at this event and it's vital that we speak to anyone who was there and who saw or recorded what happened, so that we can bring those involved to justice.

"The community will be understandably shocked and worried by what happened and we'll be carrying out extra patrols to offer reassurance today."

Officers remained at the scene yesterday carrying out forensic and CCTV enquiries.

A force spokesperson said: "We're investigating after shots were fired at a wedding party in Wolverhampton last night.

"We received a number of calls to the Gujarati Association on Mander Street, Merridale, at around 9.30pm."

Detectives urged anyone with information to get in touch via 101 or Live Chat on West Midlands Police's website, quoting log 4353 of 1 July.
