An incident occurred in Awkar, northeast of Beirut, on Wednesday morning where a gunman opened fire, targeting the US embassy in Lebanon, according to a Lebanese security source. Prime Minister Najib Mikati has initiated intensive investigations to uncover details of the incident and apprehend all those involved.
The gunman, believed to be acting alone, is currently undergoing surgery at a local hospital. The shooting took place around 8:30 a.m. local time near the embassy entrance, with Lebanese security forces and US embassy security responding swiftly to the situation.
While the motivations behind the attack remain unclear, the US embassy confirmed that its staff are safe and the facility sustained no damage. A Syrian national was injured in the incident and is receiving medical treatment at the hospital.
Lebanon's involvement in the Israel-Gaza conflict has heightened tensions in the region, with ongoing exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah raising concerns of a potential escalation into a full-scale conflict.
