Gunman In Long Island Murder-Suicide Feared Being Cut Out

Non-Binary Teen Suicide Sparks Investigation Into School Bullying Policies

A tragic murder-suicide incident unfolded in a Long Island, New York home, resulting in the deaths of five individuals. The perpetrator, a 59-year-old mechanic named Joseph DeLucia Jr., carried out the heinous act after learning that he was potentially going to be excluded from his family's will. DeLucia had recently purchased a shotgun and had concerns about being forced to vacate the residence he had lived in his entire life.

The grim events transpired following the passing of DeLucia's mother, prompting her children and niece to convene at the family home in Long Island to address matters related to the will. Unfortunately, DeLucia's escalating fears and psychological issues culminated in a violent outburst, resulting in the tragic deaths of his three siblings and niece.

Nassau County police responded to reports of gunshots at the residence on Wyoming Court in Syosset, discovering the four victims in the den area of the home. DeLucia was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the front yard. The victims were identified as JoAnne Kearns of Tampa, Florida; Frank DeLucia of Durham, North Carolina; Tina Hammond and her daughter, Victoria Hammond, of East Patchogue, New York.

The community was left in shock by the horrific incident, with neighbors revealing that DeLucia had previously made alarming statements indicating his intentions. Authorities emphasized the importance of reporting suspicious behavior to prevent such tragedies, highlighting the need for community vigilance.

Law enforcement officials expressed regret that prior concerning behavior exhibited by DeLucia had not been reported, potentially preventing the devastating outcome. Despite DeLucia legally owning the shotgun used in the crime, authorities noted that intervention could have been possible if his distress had been brought to their attention.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and community support in identifying and addressing individuals in crisis. The aftermath of the tragedy underscores the need for proactive measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
