Gujarat court remands AAP leader in judicial custody

A local court in Gandhinagar on Wednesday sent Yuvrajsinh Jadeja, a whistleblower, youth activist and chief of the Aam Aadmi Party’s youth wing in Gujarat, to judicial custody after he was arrested in an “attempt to murder” case.

After detaining him at Gandhinagar on Tuesday, he was produced before the court on Wednesday. The police claimed that he “tried to run over a policeman while trying to flee.”

Mr. Jadeja was detained near the Gandhinagar police chief’s office where he had gone to meet job aspirants who were on agitation. The police claimed that the AAP leader first tried to assault the policemen and then tried to run way in his vehicle and when the policemen were running to stop him, he tried to run over.

Police claim video footage

Gandhinagar Superintendent of Police Mayur Chavda claimed that the police had video footage of Mr. Jadeja trying to run over the policeman.” He added that the AAP leader had been booked under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code for attempt to murder and Section 332 for causing hurt to a public servant on duty.

Mr. Jadeja was a student-activist and YouTuber and whistleblower, who had spearheaded a Statewide agitation by job aspirants before he joined the AAP in 2020.

In the past few years, he emerged as a leading youth activist and leader whose complaints of irregularities in government recruitment have resulted in the cancellation of two government exams.

Last year, Mr. Jadeja’s expose of paper leak in subordinate services selection board exam to recruit clerks led to arrest of two dozen persons and the government was forced to cancel the exam. Subsequently, BJP leader and chief of the Gujarat Subordinate Services Selection Board Asit Vora had resigned from the post.

Paper leak claim

Recently, he presented evidence before media persons of an alleged paper leak in the recruitment of forest guard posts. After the expose, the  State government had accepted irregularities at a few centers  and even lodged cases and arrested some persons but it maintained that the  paper was not leaked and therefore the exam was not cancelled as was demanded.

Meanwhile, the AAP leaders termed the arrest “political” and said the government was scared of his rising reach and agitations before the Assembly polls.

This is second time a prominent AAP leader has been arrested by the Gujarat police. Earlier, the party’s Isudan Gadhavi was arrested in a prohibition case and was later released on bail.
