Gujarat: 77% Covid cases in cities but over 40% deaths in villages

AHMEDABAD: From January 1 to 28, Gujarat recorded three lakh Covid cases at a daily average of 10,752. Eight major cities accounted for 2.26 lakh or 77% of the cases. The cities included Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Junagadh and Gandhinagar. Ironically, villages accounted for 42% of the deaths while 149 of the 257 deaths or 58% were recorded from these cities.

Thus, while the eight cities' mortality rate was 0.07% or one death per 700 cases, the rest of Gujarat recorded a mortality rate of 0.15% or one death per 150 cases, or about four times higher.
