Guilfoyle resigns as ambassador to Greece – adding to the global vacancies sapping US embassies

The United States is down one more ambassador. On Oct. 13, 2026, it emerged that President Donald Trump had asked Kimberly Guilfoyle, a MAGA loyalist and ex-fiancée of Trump’s son Donald Jr., to resign her position as U.S. ambassador to Greece, a NATO ally. It follows allegations that the Trump adviser turned diplomat pushed for a Republican donor to pay off her six-figure American Express bill.

Guilfoyle later confirmed that she would comply with the request and resigned. In so doing, Athens became one of a number of U.S. overseas missions with a vacancy at the top. In fact, 93 out of 196 U.S. ambassador jobs are currently unfilled.
