Update: Rockstar has confirmed that one of its studios is "open and operational" following a widely reported boiler malfunction earlier today, and that everyone is well.
"Early Monday morning, there was a malfunction in one of the heating boilers at Rockstar North," the Rockstar spokesperson tells GamesIndustry.biz.
"Many thanks to those that reached out with concern, and also to the police and fire crews who were on scene quickly to assess the situation - please know that everyone is well and our studio remains open and operational."
Original story: Emergency services were called to GTA 6 developer Rockstar Games' Edinburgh studio, Rockstar North, in Scotland today following an incident that may reportedly have been caused by an explosion in a boiler room.
In a statement (via The Herald), a spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) says: "We were alerted at 5.02am on Monday, 19 January to attend an incident on Holyrood Road, Edinburgh." The Herald reports that around seven SFRS vehicles were sent to the scene, and the building was cordoned off.
"Operations Control mobilized three fire appliances and specialist resources to the scene, where firefighters worked to secure structural damage at a commercial building," the statement continues. Crews had left the scene by 9:21am, and "there were no reported casualties."
The cause of the incident still hasn't been publicly confirmed, but both The Herald and Edinburgh Live claim that reports suggest a boiler room explosion could be to blame. Rockstar Games hasn't made a statement at the time of writing.
Rockstar Games is currently working on GTA 6, which – after a couple of delays – is set to release on November 19 this year. Originally slated for a 2025 release, the upcoming blockbuster was first pushed back to May 26, 2026, before its date slipped again. This year, it will have been 13 years since the last main entry in the series, GTA 5.
