GTA 6 is following Red Dead Redemption 2's footsteps in how it breaks up the story, Rockstar teases

Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA 6 will be following in the footsteps of Red Dead Redemption 2 with a chapter-based story.

Ahead of GTA 6 pre-orders officially opening at midnight local time, a bunch of info was released about the upcoming open-world game on the Rockstar Games website. This included the GTA 6 price which is following in the footsteps of Mario Kart World at $80 – although considering many were worried it'd be $100, some see it as a bit of a relief. However, if you want to spend $100 on GTA 6, Rockstar also detailed the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition, which also revealed another detail about the game's story.

The open-world Rockstar games have typically been a stream of consciousness style of giving you content, feeding you one mission after another for a straight ride through the game. But with Rockstar's last game, Red Dead Redemption 2, the game was more deliberate by being split up into distinct chapters, typically focusing on one area of the map. And it looks like GTA 6 is taking that approach forward.

In the section about the Ultimate Edition, Rockstar notes that you won't get everything at once, saying "Ultimate Edition bonuses are threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story, with new items uncovered behind each chapter," confirming the chapter-based approach is returning.

Given that Red Dead Redemption 2 is undoubtedly the best story Rockstar has ever made, I'm glad to see it try this format with GTA. Although let's hope there aren't any chapters that are as much of a drag as Guarma was in Red Dead 2.

GTA 6 Online looks unlikely for launch as Rockstar refers to the game as a "single-player experience."
