As Lionel Messi continues to add to his legendary career during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, renewed interest in the Argentina captain has also put the spotlight on a little-known chapter of his childhood: his battle with growth hormone deficiency (GHD), the condition that threatened to end his football ambitions before they truly began.

The football champion stands at approximately 5 feet 7 inches (1.70 meters), with his stature having been frequently discussed throughout his career, but his height is rooted in a medical condition rather than genetics alone. He was diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency at age 11 and required years of hormone therapy to support his growth, a treatment that his family initially struggled to afford before FC Barcelona agreed to help cover the costs after signing him to its famed La Masia academy.
