Group of 18 men breaks into Thompson Center post office: Police

CHICAGO -- A group of around 18 men broke into Chicago's James R. Thompson Center early Monday morning, according to police.

The men broke a front door at the center and got inside the building around 12:35 a.m., police said. It is unknown if the men took anything, police added.

The burglars targeted the U.S. Postal Service office located at the building, according to reports. Pictures of the post office showed its door shattered and broken Monday morning.

The iconic postmodern building formerly was a state office building. It sits largely empty now after Google agreed to buy it in July.

In February, postal workers told the Tribune they were “traumatized” amid a string of attacks targeting them. Armed robbers were attempting to steal mail and “arrow” master keys that can open clusters of mailboxes.
