Memphis Grizzlies star point guard Ja Morant is set to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder, the team announced on Monday evening.
Morant, who missed the first 25 games of the campaign due to a suspension, returned to action and made his season debut on Dec. 19.
He featured in nine games since his return, but was unavailable for Sunday’s tilt against the Phoenix Suns. The Grizzlies listed Morant as questionable with shoulder soreness, though he did not suit up for the game.
The team stated Monday that Morant would require season-ending surgery on his right shoulder stemming from an injury he sustained during practice on Saturday.
“At Saturday’s training session, Morant suffered a subluxation of his right shoulder. Following ongoing soreness and instability, Morant underwent an MRI that revealed an underlying labral tear.
“Morant will undergo season-ending surgery and is expected to make a full recovery ahead of the 2024-25 season,” the statement concluded.
In nine games this year, Morant posted averages of 25.1 points, 8.1 assists, and 5.6 rebounds. Memphis, who started the season 6-19 in the two-time All-Star’s absence, was 6-3 in the nine games in which Morant was available.
