Grieving woman posts advert to cuddle stranger's dog - the replies are amazing

Losing a dog can feel incredibly lonely, but there is always support and love out there - you've just got to be brave enough to ask for it.

One heartbroken woman found the courage to ask for help after the death of her canine companion, and she is so thankful that she did.

Alice Nelson, 73, from Belfast, was struggling to grieve the loss of her 12-year-old basset hound Abner, Belfast Live reports.

She decided to post a plea on her town's Facebook page with the hopes of finding a dog to cuddle.

Despite feeling embarrassed and exposed, she bravely hit 'send' and within minutes, was flooded with responses.

Alice said: "I was feeling exceedingly vulnerable and embarrassed but I put out an FB plea to pet a basset hound.

"My beautiful boy [basset hound Abner] crossed the bridge May 4 and I've not made good progress dealing with his loss.

"I cry and my eyes are just swollen in my face from all the tears. I've just been reeling with the incredible loss."

Abner's death came as a huge shock to Alice, who explained "one day he was absolutely great, the next day so sick."

The old boy had almost reached the age of 13 - exceeding the average life expectancy of a basset hound - but it wasn't near enough.

"I needed at least five more with that clown," she said.

Alice mustered the courage to ask if anyone in her rather remote village had a basset hound she could pet, watch and give a treat.

She even offered to pay money for the experience.

"Well the outpouring of compassion from a non-dog group, generally a group that complains about the town hall's decisions, was completely heartwarming," Alice said.

"Within 10 minutes I was invited to a dog groomer where, lo and behold they were boarding a basset hound."

Two-year-old Owen came to the rescue and nuzzled into Alice's pockets - removing 12 beef treats one at a time.

"He let me pet him while being extremely squirmy, mouth open, legs wiggling, but I got belly rubs in and a few ear tickles too," Alice said.

"I bet [dogs lovers] will know how this felt. I returned home and realised this was the first time I'd had a good laugh in weeks.

"So now I know, when you need help, ask. Ask to pet a dog. It is the best medicine."
