Grenades found in Bristol garden believed to date back to WWI as more searches conducted

Officers are back today (September 7) in a residential street where WWI grenades were found yesterday (September 6). An in-depth search of the garden on Henleaze Avenue is being conducted by police.

Avon and Somerset Police was called to the street in Henleaze at 11am yesterday to reports of two suspected grenades being dug up from a garden. Upon their arrival, officers carried out a search of the garden and discovered eight grenades and three used rounds of ammunition which are believed to date back to WWI.

In a statement this morning, the force said that the objects found yesterday were successfully disposed of last night and that officers are back on-site this morning (Wednesday, September 7) conducting an in-depth search of the garden.

Avon and Somerset Police said in a statement: "We were called at 11am yesterday (Tuesday, September 6) to Henleaze Avenue, in Bristol, following reports of two suspected grenades being dug up from a garden.

"The road was closed to allow the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team to gain access. Upon their arrival, officers carried out a search of the garden and discovered eight grenades and three used rounds of ammunition which are believed to date back to WW1.

"The objects found yesterday were successfully disposed of last night. As a precaution, officers from the EOD are back on-site this morning (Wednesday, September 7) conducting an in-depth search of the garden. The road has been reopened."
