Bakery chain Greggs has confirmed plans to open a third cafe within a Primark store in its North East heartland.
The Newcastle based food-on-the-go firm first joined forces with Primark last February, launching an inaugural limited edition fashion collection as well as the world’s largest Greggs cafe inside the Birmingham store. The two high street favourites have launched three limited-edition clothing ranges in Primark stores since first teaming up in 2022. The collaboration proved to be such a success that Greggs has since launched launched two other limited-edition clothing ranges in Primark stores, as well as a further cafe in a London Primark store.
Now the bakery giant has confirmed plans to open its third Tasty by Greggs themed cafe in the Northumberland Street Primark store in Newcastle as its ramps up its collaboration with the high street retailer. A spokeswoman for Greggs said: “We’re excited to announce our third Tasty by Greggs café will be opening early 2023 in Primark’s Northumberland Street, Newcastle store. We’ll be able to share further information in the coming months.”

An opening date for the Newcastle Tasty by Greggs has yet to be announced but, as it is opening within the company’s home city fans can expect to tuck into a cafe at least on par with its Midlands counterpart, which was the world’s largest when it opened last February. Fans can look forward to the ultimate Greggs experience with ‘doughnut inspired’ seating after snapping up customer favourites including sausage rolls, bakes, pizza, sweet treats, coffee and hot food-to-go.
The Birmingham cafe has a Greggs picnic area, Sugar Strand Doughnut Swing and flying vegan sausage rolls. There is also a refillable water station and a self-serve coffee cart where customers can skip the queues and buy hot drinks using contactless payment.
At the moment, the Newcastle city centre store has a Costa Coffee cafe on the top floor of the four-storey shop, but the cafe will close to make way for Greggs.
A Costa Coffee spokesperson said: “We can confirm that the Costa Coffee situated in Primark in Newcastle will permanently close as of Wednesday 4 January 2023 due to the lease ending. At this current time, we are working with our team members on transfer opportunities to separate Costa Coffee stores in the area. We apologise for any inconvenience this store closure will cause.”
Greggs last year said it would also welcome the chance to open more Greggs cafes within Primark’s 180-plus UK stores, with former CEO Roger Whiteside saying: “At the end of the day, what’s exciting for us is we know if you put Greggs in convenient places, which includes inside other shops like Primark, it can be successful. That’s why we’ve done that. We hope in the months ahead as both of us look to evaluate how it’s done that it becomes something which might mean Primark let us open up in a few more stores. I hope to open in more Primarks, just so much as I hope to open in more Tescos and Asdas, and anywhere else that’s busy and which needs food on the go.”
