Greggs store forced to close after cheeky red squirrel sets up shop inside

A branch of bakery giant Greggs has been forced to shut its doors because a red squirrel made itself at home in the store on Sunday.

The cheeky critter was captured on camera by local resident Shona Rollo after entering the branch in the Scottish town of Pitlochry, Perthshire.

The animal initially evaded capture by lurking in the rafters of the roof, with the Scottish SPCA brought in to help try and safely remove the squirrel.

Greggs have confirmed that the store will not be reopened until the creature has been relocated to its usual habitat of the local woodland.

The Daily Record reported that Pitlochry High School had shared a picture of the adventurous critter on Twitter and said: “There’s a red squirrel in Pitlochry Greggs branch.

“The Scottish Wildlife Trust are on hand to help the wee guy out, but as this is a popular lunch option for secondary pupils, there’s a high chance it will be closed again tomorrow. Nuts!”

A spokesman for Greggs said: “Greggs in Pitlochry is closed on Monday due to a red squirrel being found in the shop.

“We’re making sure the squirrel is rescued and let back into the woodland. Once the shop has been thoroughly cleaned, the shop will reopen as normal.”

And a Scottish SPCA spokesperson added: “We were initially contacted about a squirrel in the roof of a premises in Pitlochry on Saturday.

“As the squirrel was very high up in the rafters we advised the member of the public to leave an exit for the squirrel in the hope the animal would come down of their own accord.

“Unfortunately that hasn’t been the case and a member of our animal rescue team is now in the process of trying to gain access to the shop to assess the situation.”
