A Greens politician has been stood down indefinitely and faces calls to resign over misconduct allegations.

Two complaints described by an ACT Greens spokesperson as "sexual in nature" have been made against backbencher Johnathan Davis.

Mr Davis has been contacted for comment.

Greens leader Shane Rattenbury said he received "extremely serious complaints" about Mr Davis' conduct.

Mr Rattenbury said his office had not seen evidence of illegal activity but reported what it knew to police.

"A complaint was brought to my attention at the beginning of this week, with another following shortly after," he said in a statement on Friday.

"I immediately asked a member of my senior staff to do an initial review to establish the appropriate next steps and I have stood Mr Davis down."

Police confirmed they received a referral in relation to the matter.

In a joint statement, ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr and deputy Yvette Berry said the allegations were "very serious" and called on Mr Davis to resign from the Legislative Assembly.

"These are very serious allegations against a sitting MLA and do impact his ability to undertake his role," they said.

"Mr Davis will need to consider his position.

"The best path would be to accept what we understand to be the position of the ACT Greens party leadership and resign his position in the assembly."

They asked the ACT Greens to ensure support was provided to the individuals who made the matters public and said services were available to members of the community who were distressed.

Mr Davis is the member for the southern ACT seat of Brindabella and was elected to the territory's Legislative Assembly in 2020.
